👋 Hey Warrior,

Yesterday we talked about how escape is the main goal in self-defense.

Now, let's look at how we can actually make that escape happen.

It doesn't just magically occur…

…you often need to create the chance yourself.

Creating openings means using certain actions not necessarily to win, but specifically to give you that moment you need to get away.

Think about some of the techniques you learn.

We often practice them as ways to fight back.

But what if we thought about them as ways to create space?

For example, a strong push can create distance so you can turn and run.

Using your arms to create a frame against someone trying to grab you?

That's keeping them off you just long enough to find an escape route.

Even simple strikes can be used differently.

Instead of trying to land a knockout blow (which is hard and risky!)…

…maybe a quick strike acts as a distraction.

Something sudden that makes the attacker pause or flinch.

That brief moment might be all you need to disengage and move towards safety.

The goal of the strike isn't damage…

…it's creating that window of opportunity.

Why does thinking this way matter?

Because it connects your training directly to the real goal…

…getting out alive.

When you understand that techniques can be tools for escape, you start training differently.

You look for ways to create space.

You practice how to move immediately after making that opening.

It makes your training much more practical for real-world self-defense.

It's using your skills intelligently to survive.

Final Thoughts

So, remember that many martial arts moves can be used for more than just fighting.

They can be your key to creating the space you need to escape.

Don’t get lost in the space, use it to you advantage.

Stay safe,

Paul Simoes

P.S. Knowing the methods is one thing, but you also need the right mindset to actually see and take those escape chances when they appear. We'll dive into that tomorrow!
