How to Survive a Riot
Riots can erupt unexpectedly, like an unexpected storm. When emotions run high and situations spiral into chaos, it's crucial to know how to stay safe. Understanding how to protect oneself during these events is not about living in fear, but about being prepared. Let's explore how you can navigate such turbulent events with confidence.
Understanding Riots and Their Causes
Understanding what sparks riots can help you recognize early warning signs and prepare accordingly.
Common Triggers of Riots
Riots often stem from deep-seated issues that boil over into public anger and frustration. Social injustice, economic disparity, and political events often act as the tinder that ignites these powder kegs. Think of riots as a pressure cooker; when grievances are ignored, the steam has to escape somewhere.
Types of Riots
Not all riots begin with malicious intent. Some peaceful protests escalate into riots, while others can be more organized attacks intended to cause disruption. It’s vital to recognize the difference. Just as not every cloud brings rain, not every protest leads to violence, but when it does, preparation is key.
Preparation Before A Riot Occurs
Preparation isn't just for the survivalists; having a plan can make all the difference.
Creating a Safety Plan
First things first: outline a safety plan. Identify escape routes in your area and know where safe zones—places like police stations and hospitals—are located. It's like planning your path through a maze: knowing your exits helps you avoid dead ends.
Essential Items to Carry
Consider assembling a go-bag with essentials like a first aid kit, bottled water, and emergency contact information. These items can be lifesavers if you're thrust into the middle of chaos unexpectedly. It's similar to having an umbrella handy; you hope you won't need it, but you'll be glad you have it if the skies open up.
During a Riot: Safety Strategies
Once you’re in the thick of it, staying safe is all about quick thinking and cautious action.
Staying Calm and Assessing the Situation
Panic can cloud judgment faster than a sudden fog bank. Staying calm enables you to assess the situation clearly and decide the best course of action. It's like driving in the rain—you need to stay steady to avoid skidding out of control.
Avoiding Confrontation
Keeping a low profile is paramount. Avoid engaging with rioters and steer clear of confrontation. Blend in with the crowd and avoid standing out. Remember: the goal is not to be a hero, but to remain safe. It's akin to walking through a minefield; the less you disturb, the safer you are.
Finding an Escape Route
Know when it’s time to retreat. Identify open spaces and less crowded streets to make your escape. If possible, move in the opposite direction of the crowd. Picture yourself dodging traffic; sometimes, going against the flow is the safest path.
After the Riot: What to Do
Once the dust has settled, there are steps to ensure everyone's safety and begin recovery.
Checking for Injuries and Help
First, check yourself and others for injuries. Administer first aid if needed and contact emergency services. Your immediate attention can prevent minor injuries from becoming major issues. Think of it as patching a leak before it becomes a flood.
Reporting Incidents to Authorities
It's important to report any violence or crime observed to authorities. Your information might be the missing piece in a larger puzzle, helping to restore order and prevent future escalation. Reporting is like adding a crucial piece to a jigsaw; every bit helps complete the picture of what happened.
Final Thoughts
Living through a riot is like navigating through a storm—you must remain anchored and vigilant. By preparing ahead of time, staying calm during the chaos, and taking precautionary measures after, you safeguard not only yourself but those around you. Remember, preparedness and awareness are your best defenses in unpredictable situations. Stay safe out there!

From Around The Net
In 1921, six-year-old Olivia Hooker and her family were hiding as white mobs attacked Tulsa’s Greenwood district, a prosperous Black community.
Sparked by false allegations against a Black man, the mobs destroyed over 1,000 homes and businesses, leaving many dead and thousands homeless.
For decades, the Tulsa Race Massacre was overlooked, but Olivia went on to help bring awareness, becoming the first African-American woman in the U.S. Coast Guard and advocating for justice through the Tulsa Race Riot Commission.

Here’s this weeks question:
Q - What was the costliest riot in American history?
A - In order to determine the ‘cost’ of the riots we can get an idea from insurance payouts. Of course not everyone has insurance and we can never measure the psychological costs.
But looking at the insurance payouts, the riots following George Floyd’s death from May 26 to June 8, 2020, resulted in the most costly civil unrest in U.S. history, with insurance losses ranging between $1-2 billion across 20 states.
These surpassed the $775 million in damages caused by the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
The widespread nature of the 2020 protests, occurring in over 140 cities, made them unprecedented in terms of insurance payouts.
However, these losses still pale in comparison to natural disasters like hurricanes and wildfires.
Here’s a list for you:
-May 26-June 8, 2020 20 states across U.S. $1-2b - 1-2b
-Apr. 29-May 4, 1992 Los Angeles, CA $775m - 1.42b
-Aug. 11-17, 1965 Los Angeles, CA $44m - 357m
-Jul. 23, 1967 Detroit, MI $42m - 322m
-May 17-19, 1980 Miami, Fl $65m - 204m
-Apr. 4-9, 1968 Washington, DC $24m - 179m
-Jul. 13-14, 1977 New York, NY $28m -118m
-Jul. 12. 1967 Newark, NJ $15m - 115m
-Apr. 6-9, 1968 Baltimore, MD $14m - 104m
-Apr. 4-11, 1968 Chicago, IL $13m - 97m
