š Hey Warrior,
Working as a bouncer was long periods boredom sprinkled with a few minutes of excitement.
Once such sprinkle of excitement happened when a fight broke out on the dance floor.
It was a chaotic scene with multiple people involved.
As other bouncers moved in to control the main participantsā¦
ā¦I focused on forming a protective perimeter.
Suddenly, some guy tried to literally dive past me onto the fight pile!!!
As he was midairā¦
ā¦I executed a perfectly timed takedown that would have made Khabib Nurmagomedov proud.
The guy landed with a thud, and his entrance to the fight was quickly contained.
It was a wild situation, but it highlighted the importance of staying alert and being prepared for anything.
The Power of Perimeter Control
This experience taught me a valuable lesson about self-defenseā¦
ā¦it's not just what's directly in front of you.
You also have to maintain awareness of your entire perimeter.
Threats can come from unexpected angles, blind spots, and moments of transition.
The 360Ā° Mindset
In self-defense, we often focus too much on what's right in front of us.
But to truly stay safe, we need to develop a 360Ā° mindset.
We need to constantly be scanning our surroundings and anticipating potential threats from all directions.
Awareness Exercises
Here are two drills to help you develop your awareness:
Drill 1: Public Observation
When you're in public, pay attention to the people around you.
Notice their body language, movements, and overall demeanor.
Ask yourself:
Do they seem relaxed or tense?
Are they making eye contact or avoiding it?
Are their movements fluid or erratic?
Drill 2: Expanding Awareness
Sit in a public place and practice expanding your awareness without turning your head.
Try to sense:
What's behind you
Movement to your sides
Changes in sound patterns
Shifts in air movement
The Question That Changes Everything
Throughout your day, practice asking yourselfā¦
"If something happened right now, what's my perimeter situation?"
This question forces you to assess your surroundings and identify potential escape routes or defensive positions.
Final Thoughts
Remember, Warrior, your perimeter is your first and last line of defense.
Every time you practice awareness and scan your surroundingsā¦
ā¦you're building the habits that could save your life.
Stay aware, stay alive,
