š Hey Warrior,
We've spent this week talking about escape as the goalā¦
ā¦ways to create openings
ā¦and the mindset needed.
Now, let's touch on how we should actually train for thisā¦
Itās great to practice techniquesā¦
ā¦but if you only practice them standing still, you're missing a huge piece of the puzzle.
In a real self-defense situation, you don't want to stay put.
You want to get away.
So, our drills need to include movement towards safety.
After you practice that technique to create space, the drill shouldn't just end there.
You should immediately practice moving away, maybe towards a specific point like a door or a designated "safe zone" on the training floor.
This connects the technique directly to the goal ā escape.
Real environments also aren't empty spaces like a training mat often is.
There might be furniture, parked cars, pillars, or other people.
Escape often means navigating around things.
So, good escape-focused training should start to include simple obstacles.
This helps you practice not just running away, but running away smartly, using things for cover, or just getting around things that are in your path.
The main goal here is simpleā¦
ā¦make escaping a natural part of your trained response.
We want to combine the technique (like a push or a strike) with the act of moving away and navigating towards safety.
Training this way helps build the habit.
It makes escape something you do, not just something you think about.
It helps ensure that if you ever need these skills, your body already knows the drill includes getting out of there.
Hereās a video with some quick moves you can employ to create the opportunity to escape:
Final Thoughts
So, take a moment to think about how you usually train.
Do your drills end with the technique, or do they include that crucial next stepā¦
ā¦moving towards safety?
Keep training smart,

P.S. Tomorrow, we'll wrap up the week and bring all these ideas about fighting to escape together in our weekly recap!
