The Tragic Tale of Samantha Koenig

It was a typical cold evening on February 1, 2012, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Samantha Koenig, an 18-year-old with a bright smile and a zest for life, was working the night shift at Common Grounds, a local coffee stand.

He drives her to a shed at his residence, all while keeping tabs on the police scanner, listening for possible reports about Samantha.

Inside the shed, Keyes assaults Samantha and then takes her life.

Then Keyes, in a twisted act of cruelty, leaves Samantha’s lifeless body in the shed while he goes on a pre-planned cruise with his girlfriend and 10 year old daughter.

Upon returning from vacation, Keyes concocts a ghastly plan.

He takes a photograph of Samantha’s body, posed to make it appear she’s still alive, and sends it to her family, demanding a ransom.

The heartbreak her family must have felt, believing there was still hope, only to be deceived so cruelly, is beyond comprehension.

Paying the ransom, Samantha’s family deposits money in Samantha’s bank account, as instructed by Keyes.

Keyes then proceeds to dismember Samantha’s body and disposes of it in Matanuska Lake.

Within a few days the FBI notices Samantha’s debit card pinging at various locations across the country and begins to track it, leading to the eventual capture of Keyes by the authorities.

During his interrogation, Keyes confesses to multiple murders, 11 in total, revealing himself as a serial killer who had evaded capture for years.

In the end, Israel Keyes takes his own life while in custody, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and shattered lives.
